"My family sent jihadists to kill me"

Jun 2, 2019

Anna's story is heartbreaking, and sadly, one that is very common in Muslim-dominated countries. Together, we can reach out to suffering Christians like Anna and others who are experiencing horrific persecution. -Mat

Anna was raised in a devout Muslim family and remembers her father relocating them from Egypt to the city of Timbuktu in Mali to spread Islam. She was eight-years old when her father died and the children were adopted by an uncle.

He enrolled Anna and her sisters in the international Christian school there, a common practice among Muslims desiring a better education for their children. Anna however, began to open her heart to Jesus and became a follower of her new-found Savior at twelve-years old. Her family disowned her immediately.

She faced rejection on all sides. Her family would, in her words, "Curse the blood we shared." They would spit at her and call her an infidel. She found solace in the children's song, "Yes, Jesus Loves Me," and sang it often, clinging to Jesus in the midst of the pain. At sixteen she married a Christian man from Belgium, and soon had two sons to raise alone. Her husband was gunned down for his faith and for marrying an ex-Muslim. His body was never found.

One day, rebels came to her home and abducted her eldest son, who was only 14. Anna and her younger son were terrified. The rebels held her eldest son for two days and brutally whipped him before releasing him. Both boys were left severely traumatized.

You may be wondering how you can possibly make a difference in a situation as harsh as Anna’s. It's easier than you think.

After fleeing the area and spending more than a year with her boys in a displaced persons camp in Bamako, one of our Christ-centered partners in the field became aware of Anna's plight. He networked her need, and because of generous friends like you, Anna was provided with rent money for a simple apartment. She was so relieved to finally have a safe place for her family.

You can help care for fellow believers who are being targeted for their faith today.

First and foremost, you can pray. Secondly, you can give a tax-deductible gift of 50, 100, 500 dollars or more that will enable us to send urgently needed aid to our partners in the field who are working with Christians most at risk from violence, torture, false imprisonment, kidnapping, rape, or even death.

Your support helps us provide for immediate humanitarian needs like Anna's as well as things like:

  • Emergency food and water, safe houses, trauma counseling, literacy training, job training
  • Restoration assistance to rebuild churches and homes
  • Bibles, Bible study materials, and discipleship training

Though you and I may never meet precious believers like Anna this side of Heaven—if we are able to help we must.

Thank you for standing with LRI to pray for and care for our hurting brethren throughout the Middle East, northern Africa, Asia and the world.

God bless you,

P.S. You can help LRI minister to the urgent needs of persecuted Christians and others in unbelievably desperate situations with your generous gift today.
