You're Helping Women like Aisha Heal from Brutality!

Jun 10, 2019

Aisha, her husband, and their three children live in Kano, one of the Sharia-governed states in northern Nigeria—an area also impacted by deadly Fulani militant violence.

When they heard a neighbor woman crying out in the night, Aisha and her husband cautiously opened their door to see what was wrong. Fulani militants had broken into the neighbor's house and taken the woman's husband. Before Aisha's husband could close the door, several of the attackers barged into their home too. When they saw her husband's Bible on the table, they assumed he was a pastor and took him away.

Ten attackers stayed behind with Aisha and her children. She shared, "They demanded sex, and I pleaded that I did not want to sleep with them. They beat me up. One of them raped me, [and] then a second person raped me. After that, they left, taking with them everything valuable."

The 28-year old mother was devastated. When her husband was released by the militants several hours later, he rushed to her side to comfort her. But the trauma she suffered ran deep.

"I had no peace in my heart. I couldn't eat, and I couldn't sleep. Whenever I was alone, I remembered how those two men raped me. I felt so much hatred in my heart toward them."

Thankfully, some of the Christ-centered partners we work with were already established in the area and could offer much needed trauma counseling to Aisha, and other women in the area who have suffered similar brutal attacks.

With a confident smile, Aisha shared, "God taught me to forgive... I saw the mind of God concerning me, and how He looks at me. He is the only One that can bring comfort to us [in the midst of] these things that have happened."

The counseling Aisha received has not only restored her hope and her peace, but she is sharing what she learned with others. She says, "I want everyone who has gone through my situation to know that God is aware of it and that He says He'll bring out good from the situation."
